EDIT ML High School Summer Internship Program
The Department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center (Emerging Diagnostic and Investigative Technologies; EDIT) Machine Learning program has been developing, validating, and scaling artificial intelligence technologies that aim to improve clinical efficiency and patient outcomes. Our group has developed computational methods to assess and integrate a wide variety of modalities, ranging from whole slide images, to pathology text reports, metagenomic sequences, graphs, electronic health records, and multi-omics datatypes. Opportunities exist to develop skills to analyze these high dimensional datatypes using R, Python, and high-performance computing, communicate their findings to a clinical research audience, and gain experience in scientific writing (spearheading potential research publications). Through a series of lectures/seminars, guided projects, and IRB supported basic research, interns develop algorithms to explore diagnostic spaces in pathology from cancer detection, to gigapixel image manipulation, to text prediction, amongst many others. We are looking for summer interns / undergraduate researchers with a background in CS, a basic familiarity/exposure in deep learning / machine learning pipelines, and an enthusiasm for doing public good through high-throughput computation. Included here is a small representative list of the dozens of projects in development in the EDIT ML group: Projects.
If you are interested in this opportunity, please fill out an internship application form here: Application.
If you have any follow up questions, please feel free to reach out by email to:

Students will work on projects including but not limited to:
- Digital Spatial Profiler (spatial gene/protein expression quantification with UV-cleavable oligos) for Colon Cancer Metastasis prediction
- Natural Language Processing for Pathology Reports
- Virtual staining technologies
- Bladder cancer assessment tool development
- Quality control for molecular genomics
- Hierarchical Bayesian methods for disease prognostication
- Statistical consultation for clinical research studies
- Computational methods development for imaging data
- Valuation of data and sample size optimization
- Information extraction from large medical images
- Multi-omics (e.g., DNA Methylation analyses)
What to include in your application: Interested applicants should email a CV and cover letter to Prof. Joshua Levy (joshua.j.levy@dartmouth.edu) to schedule an interview.
Timeline: Applicants will be interviewed for the position during Winter 2024 and preparation for the Summer internship is expected to take place during or before Spring 2025. Research mentors will facilitate skills development and project scoping prior to the internship start date. We are also accepting students at an on-going basis that is independent of the Summer internship.
Internship at The Levy Lab and DHMC Department of Dermatology
The Levy Lab (https://geiselmed.dartmouth.edu/epidemiology/profile/joshua-levy-phd/), in collaboration with the Department of Dermatology at Dartmouth Hitchcock Medical Center, is looking for talented students to learn how to develop and apply artificial intelligence technologies to prevent and treat skin cancer and other medical conditions of interest to our research group. Our group has developed computational methods to assess and integrate a wide variety of modalities, ranging from whole slide images, to pathology text reports, metagenomic sequences, and multi-omics datatypes. Opportunities exist to develop skills to analyze these high dimensional datatypes using R, Python, and high-performance computing, communicate their findings to a clinical research audience, and gain experience in scientific writing (spearheading potential research publications).
Qualifications: We are looking for students with a background in computer science (minimum experience equivalent to QBS101), a familiarity/exposure in deep learning / machine learning pipelines (experience equivalent to QBS108) or significant bioinformatics experience (equivalent to QBS175/GENE111), and an enthusiasm for doing public good through high-throughput computation.
Students will work on projects including but not limited to:
- Developing multiple surgical assistance tools
- Skin aging: investigate spatial molecular methods to assess skin damage from sun exposure
